A 12-month birds-first mentorship and contest clinic for photographers who already know which end of the camera the light comes out of.
You don't have a shooting problem.
You have an editing problem. A curation problem. And, if we're being honest, a courage problem.
You come back from a session with two hundred frames. There's something in there. You can feel it. You just can't tell which one. So you post the one with the eye contact and the catchlight, and another decent one sits unloved on your drive forever.
Then contest season rolls round and you enter what you think is your strongest image. Nothing happens. You don't know if it was the wrong image, the wrong category, or just the year. You don't enter again.
Coaching & Contest is built around the part most mentorships skip: judgement. The work of looking at a folder of your own pictures and knowing, with reasons, which one belongs in front of a jury and which one belongs in the bin.

Who this isn't for
- Beginners. If you're still working out back-button focus, this isn't the right place and I'll tell you that on the consultation call rather than take your money.
- People who want gear advice, presets, or a pat on the head
- People who want a holiday with a camera bag attached
- People who can't take a direct critique without going to ground for a week
If you're not sure which side of that line you sit on, book the call. I'd rather have an honest twenty-minute conversation than sign you up to something that isn't going to work.
What you'll actually do
The year breaks into four phases of three months. Each phase ends with a checkpoint — a deliverable that proves you've moved.

Diagnostic & Foundations (Months 1–3)
Stop shooting blind. Start seeing your own work clearly. You'll audit what you've got, build the habit of comparing similar frames properly, and start shooting with intent instead of hope.

Voice & Body of Work (Months 4–6)
Find what you actually photograph. We'll pattern-spot across your existing work to find recurring themes you didn't know were there, scope a proper project brief, and learn to sequence images so they say something together that they couldn't say apart.

Contest Clinic (Months 7–9)
The bit most mentorships skip or do badly. Mapping your work onto a real contest calendar. Working through actual judging rubrics in screen-shared Contest Edit Room sessions. Ethics, rules, and the disclosures that save careers.

Submission & Forward Plan (Months 10–12)
Send the work. Reflect honestly on what's changed. Build a written plan for year two — because most photographers improve in years two and three, not year one.
Contest thread
Contest preparation isn't a module. It runs through the whole year.
A single working file lives for the full twelve months. We build it together.
Longlist (Month 1, grown all year) — every frame you and I both think is plausible contest material. Tagged. Dated. Scored against the rubric.
Shortlist (Month 8) — six per target category. Three-sentence written case for each.
Final cut (Month 10) — what actually gets submitted, with captions and metadata locked.
The Contest Edit Room sessions are 90 minutes, screen-shared, recorded. Real judging rubric on screen. Each candidate gets yes / no / maybe — with reasons. Two of these sessions in Core. Four in Premium.
You'll learn to assess category fit (most rejections are misfilings, not bad images), run every image through the ethics and rules checklist (captive, bait, call playback, AI policy, manipulation rules), and — possibly the most useful skill in this whole programme — decide what not to enter.

About me
I'm Vince Maidens. I've been photographing wildlife — and birds in particular — for long enough to have made every selection mistake there is to make, more than once. I write The Authentic Voice on Substack about exactly the kind of thinking this programme is built on. I host the podcast of the same name. The work, the writing, and the way I run mentorships are all the same thing: skills over gear, deep local knowledge, honest critique, and a low tolerance for nonsense.

Questions you'll have
Will I win a contest if I do this?
I have no idea, and anyone telling you they can guarantee it is lying. What I can do is teach you to judge your work properly, prepare entries that actually fit the category, and submit work that's been through the same kind of filter the panels use. That's the honest version.
What if I miss a session?
Let me know in advance and we'll move it. If you miss without notice, I'll chase once. Twice in a row and we'll talk about whether this is the right year.
Do I get the recordings?
Yes. Live sessions and Contest Edit Rooms are recorded and sent within 48 hours.
What timezone are you in?
UK. I can accommodate Europe, the US East Coast, and most of the Americas. Australia and East Asia are harder but not impossible — flag it on the application and we'll talk about it on the call.
Are field days included?
No. Field days are always optional add-ons at standard rates (preferred rates for Premium mentees). The mentorship works fully remote — that's the design, not a compromise.
What's your refund policy?
There's a 14-day cooling-off period from your Month 1 session. After that, no refunds — but you can defer a maximum of one month per year for genuine reasons.
I'm not sure I'm at the right level. Should I apply?
Yes, if you've read this page and thought "that might be me." The consultation call costs you nothing and we'll work it out together. If you're not ready, I'll say so honestly.
